Southwest CFO: Hedging Is for Stability, Not Profit

“In an interview with aviation blogger Evan Sparks, Southwest Airlines CFO Laura Wright defended against charges that the company was hypocritical for signing on to the Air Transport Association-led Stop Oil Speculation Now coalition while at the same time aggressively hedging its own oil needs. ‘Wright said that Southwest doesn’t hedge for financial gain as much as for financial stability,’ Sparks reports. ‘The fact that Southwest is paying as little as $51 per barrel is a financial benefit not to be sneezed at, but its benefit is primarily in terms of being able to predict what costs will be and being insulated from fast-moving fluctuations in the price of jet fuel.’”

Taxpayers Shell Out For Near-Empty Flights

Open Skies: Opportunity, Challenge for Airlines; Europe-U.S. Pact Opens Routes, Competition for Carriers Like United

“Despite the increased competition, United has been a leading advocate of the Open Skies pact, which went into effect March 30. It’s expected to boost trans-Atlantic traffic by 50% and save travelers more than $20 billion by 2013, according to European Union estimates. ‘It means more competition for any airline serving trans-Atlantic routes,’ says Evan Sparks, an aviation policy analyst in Washington, D.C. ‘It means more competition for United.’”

Dulles Steps Up for West Virginians

“Aviation policy blogger Evan Sparks agrees. He said the people of Clarksburg and Morgantown shouldn’t be concerned over parting with Pittsburgh. ‘Continuing flights to Pittsburgh is a losing proposition given the changes in the airline situation there,’ Sparks said. ‘It’s going to be good for them if they can attract flights to another major hub on a different airline.’”
